Designing for Panic: When intuitive interactions aren't enough
Meetup Details
In "Eight Steps to an Intuitive UI", I present the eight steps required for users to successfully get through the interaction lifecycle, which is required for an intuitive UI. But implicit to the lifecycle is that the user is working under normal circumstances and can perform the interaction without duress.
But that isn't always the case. By "panic", I'm referring to special circumstances where life and safety are on the line, the consequences for making a mistake are significant, the user has extreme time pressure, the opportunity is "once in a lifetime", or the context is otherwise extremely stressful or embarrassing. Imagine designing diagnostic equipment for an emergency room.
In this webinar, we will review the intuitive attributes, explore some common panic scenarios, discover what's missing, and propose special design principles to design for panic. You will discover that "panic" shows up more often than you might think, as there are several panic scenarios on your smartphone.
